My thrifty find at Goodwill.....

Today my daughter and I set out to do some grocery shopping and a trip to Costco. We stopped off at the Goodwill to donate some items and decided to have a look around the Goodwill store. I haven't been in a Goodwill store in years! A fellow FB and blogger friend, Kim, from Threadheads Unite, always has a Thrifty Thursday post on her blog and it inspired me to stop in and have a look. We looked at the books and my daughter found one she liked, brand new for $2.99 I must remember to take my son to look for books there since he always must have a book to read at all times. :) We wandered on through the store and looked at the furniture, glasswear and various items. Wandering down one isle up on the top shelf I spotted......A QUILTING HOOP!!! It's one of those hoops that is made to sit on your lap so that as you quilt it can turn easily as you need it to. I have always wanted one of these hoops. My husband bought me a quilt hoop for my birthday last year and I was hoping he could make additions to it to turn it into one of these. I am not sure what it's called, but I love it and was so happy to spot it. I have seen them displayed at quilt shows but they are always so expensive. This one was sold at Craft Warehouse for $38.99 but I bought it from Goodwill for $12.99. I am so excited to try it out. I think I will start with this little table topper I made in reproduction prints.
What do you use when hand quilting in your lap?

  3. I have one just like that. A women who owns a quilt shop husband made them. I snacthed one right up and have been using it ever since. I also have a frame that really enjoy. Since nothing needs to be basted in the frame I have. Have fun with your find.

  4. Wow, that was a very good deal on the hoop. I have never seen anything quilt related in my local goodwill. Although I have heard of some folks even finding fabric at some!! I will just have to keep looking occasionally. I find that this type of lap hoop is great for smaller projects. When I quilt bigger projects I use a 14" hoop without the stand. I love the little quilt you put in the hoop! :0)

  5. I had never seen a quilt hoop like this one, until I saw one today at the AQS quilt show in Lancaster, PA. This one was made of plastic, but you could stand it on its head and use it as an embroidery hoop as well, or as a hoop for small rug-hooking projects as well. You have made an excellent find, Jan!

  6. LUCKY Girl!!!
Oh, you should let us know if it really makes a difference as I always wondered... I have a regular quilting hoop which I need to support on the back of a chair or a pillow when quilting...
:) Oh, I am so happy for you!

  9. I have three of these but they are not big and strong to quilt in they are for stitching Candlewick blocks, I have a huge hoop for hand quilting that is just a hoop and really too big to handle. Great find. I love the charity shops, you never know what you will find in them.

  10. WOW! What a GREAT find! Such a BLESSING! That's very nice! I NEEEEEEED a lap hoop. I just haven't been able to decide on one. I came very close to purchasing a floor frame, as I do lots of larger quilts... I think this is what I truly should use. To answer you question, I use a LARGE plain hoop that I found at a resale store for 3.00! It doesn't have the stand like yours, just a hoop. It's fine. Except, when turning a large quilt, it can get laborious. Also, it's HOT in the South! lol So, I don't want to be covered with a quilt MOST of the months here. I'm just waiting to find the right floor frame. God will put it there for me when it's time. Don't you just love how He does little things like He does to let us know...?
